Meaningful connection – for the health of the human spirit and our entire being.
It is easy to feel alone when you are struggling on the fertility journey. The truth is that you don’t have to be alone as there are many sharing their own version of this struggle. Connecting with others who have some insight and understanding into what you are going through is important. Connecting with someone who’s advice you value is also vital.
I was thinking more about this sometime ago when I shared some moon-rise magic on an evening walk with a visiting friend. That month’s super-moon was quite something to behold! While we hiked up the hill behind my house, as always I loved our conversation. Our discussion was exciting and filled with ideas containing all sorts of possibilities. We chatted happily between ourselves and with others we met along the way, not too concerned that the increasing cloud cover could thwart the greater purpose of this walk. As the big, grey fluffies grew and darkness crept up on us, we were almost convinced we were not going to have our magical moon-rise moment. So we began a slow descent, carefully navigating rocks and tussocks as we headed across the farmland towards home. Then suddenly, emerging through wispy layers of cloud, her beauty, stillness, magical luminescence and quiet emergence from the sea silenced us. We were in awe!
My friend was staying with me whilst attending a Singularity University three day conference. Each night she gave me the edited highlights of the day, covering a wide range of topics and industries at the forefront of innovation and disruption. We spoke in awe of the technological advances that have been made in many areas affecting the quality of human existence as well as the health of our planet. There is no doubt about it, the future is here and has the ability to change our lives in very positive ways once the consumer pathways are created. For all the craziness in the world there are also some amazing people developing tools and methods that will have extraordinarily beneficial impacts on our lives. Some changes will be forced upon us, others we will make personal choices about.
As exciting as many favourable technological changes are, it was not lost on me that night, that as humans we still have a fundamental need for deep and meaningful connection with people and nature. There is a special magic in both that speaks to our hearts and souls at the deepest of levels. Technology that allows us to connect in more ways across time and space is a great thing, but there will always be people with whom we love to be in the physical presence of. Our entire being responds positively to being with members of our tribe and with those we love deeply. And so it is with our connection to nature. To stand in awe of the presence of nature and all her majesty, has the ability to connect us to something bigger than ourselves and to something greater within our being. I am sure it has been so since the beginning of human kind – and I am sure that will remain a constant for all time. The ancient practitioners of Chinese medicine observed that we are all intrinsically connected to each other and to nature. Significantly, we now know that meaningful connection is important for the health of the human spirit and therefore of our entire being and experience of life. There are numerous studies demonstrating this.
